Rather than painting hard boiled eggs this year, try making fun 'permanent designer' eggs. One slip and you can have a eggy mess, but if you are careful the results can be wonderful. Eggs are usually cheaper around Easter so even if you ruin a few, it won't be an expensive craft. They can be decorated with paint, ribbon and stuck-on shapes- even sequins. No worry about spoilage either!

You will need:

eggs (as many as you like)
a medium to large safety pin
saucer to hold the contents of the eggs
soft pencil
acrilic paints and paintbrushes
glue
ribbons
sticker stars or other small sticker decoration you like
a basket for display

1. Wash the eggs in cold water and dry on paper towels. Use a sharp-pointed pin to screw a small hole in each end of an egg. (Plan on having a few messy eggs, but it really does get easier with practice!)

2. Shake the egg vigorously to break the yolk and mix it with the white. Then hold the egg over a saucer and blow hard but gently into one hole until all the contents have run out of the other hole.

Wash the shell carefully under cold running water, rinsing out several times. Then leave it to dry.

Repeat the process with other eggs.

3. Use a soft pencil to mark a design lightly on each shell.

4. Use one color paint at a time to fill in your designs

5. Paint some eggs one color all over. Just for a break.

6. Glue a loop of silk ribbon on the top of an egg for hanging.

7. For designing striped eggs indicate lightly the areas of different color in pencil.

8. Put colors in the stripes using the penciled lines as a guide.

9. Decorate plain painted eggs with bands of ribbon and bows.

10. Stick on the sticker stars or other stickers around the designs on the eggs.

Enjoy! Pack them up carefully with lots of tissue in a shoebox and store them for next year.
